July 9, St. Paul, MO – It took a total team effort from the Bombers to hold off one of the top teams in the OCAC 8U Machine Pitch League on Wednesday night.
The Bombers entered the night with a one game lead in the standings over St. Paul. Regarded as having one of the top offenses in the league, St. Paul held true to their reputation and presented a very difficult test for the Bombers.
The Bombers got off to a fast start by virtue of a Conner C. triple to lead off the game. Nate E. tallied the RBI on a groundout to second base to put the Bombers on the scoreboard. Three straight hits by Carter A., Luke B. and Grayson C. produced another run in the opening inning.
After a groundout to Carter A. at second base, #7 for the Knights gave the St. Paul crowd something to cheer about with home run hit to centerfield. Unfortunately for the Knights two strikeouts would end their bid to tie the game after one inning.
The Bombers were unable to post a crooked number in their half of the 2nd inning despite a single by Luke L. and double by Parker F. St. Paul would tie the game in the bottom of the 2nd despite two strikeouts in the inning.
Looking to regain momentum, the Bombers were ignited by a hard hit single to right field from Connor C. followed by another single by Hayden H. Conner C. would notch his second triple of the game to score both Connor C. and Hayden H. Nate E. would continue the rally with his second RBI of the game on a hard ground ball single. Two more singles by Luke B. and Grayson C. followed by a hard hit grounder by Corey F. and the Bombers had plated the maximum 5 runs in the top of the 3rd to take a 7-2 lead.
Two quick hits by the Knights put runners in scoring position as #1, arguably one of the top hitters on the St. Paul team, came to the plate. As expected, #1 tagged a deep fly ball to centerfield, a ball that typically goes for a triple or possibly even home run. Yet this time Luke L. was in position and made a spectacular leaping catch. After a pop out and then ground out to Grayson C. at first base, the Bombers escaped what could have been a big inning for the Knights.
Leading 7-2 entering the top of the 4th the Bombers were in position to put away the Knights but unfortunately couldn’t mount a rally in either the 4th or 5th innings. The Knights however were able to plate 3 in the 5th, bringing the score 7-5 after 5.
Needing 4 runs to secure a win the Bombers pounced early. Carter A. hit a line drive up the middle hitting the machine for a single. A Luke B. triple, followed by a Grayson Coleman double and the Bombers were a few hits away from finishing the ballgame. Four consecutive singles by Corey F., Jackson P., Zeke B. and Luke L. and the Bombers plated 5 in the 6th to lock up their 9th win on the season.
